The following are guidelines about what to do if heat is extreme:
1. Stay indoors as much as possible and limit sun exposure.
2. If air conditioning is not available, stay on the ground away from sunlight.
3. Consider spending the hottest part of the day in public buildings, such as libraries, schools, cinemas, shopping malls and other communitarian facilities. Air circulation cools the body because it increases the sweat evaporation index.
4. Ingest well balanced, light and regular meals. Avoid using salt tablets unless advised otherwise by a doctor.
5. Drink abundant water. People who suffer from epilepsy or heart, kidney or liver conditions; those following liquid restricting diets or liquid retention problems must seek medical attention before increasing liquid intake.
6. Limit alcohol intake.
7. Wear loose, light and light colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
8. Protect your face and head with a wide hat.
9. Get in touch with relatives, friends and neighbors with no air conditioning and that spend large amounts of time alone.
10. Never leave children or domestic animals alone in closed vehicles.
11. Avoid straining work during the hottest part of the day. Use a partner system when working in extreme heat and take frequent breaks.
