During a Volcanic Eruption

The following are guidelines about what to do during a volcanic eruption in your area:
•    Evacuate the area immediately to avoid flying rubble, hot gas, lateral explosions and lava rivers.
•    Beware of mud avalanches. The danger of a mud avalanche increases near rivers and strong prolonged rain. Mudslides travel faster than anyone is able to walk or run. Look upstream before crossing a bridge, and do not cross if you see that a mudslide is approaching.
•    Avoid low lying areas and river valleys.

What to do after an eruption

1.    Avoid areas where ash has fallen, if possible. If you are in an area full of ash, cover your mouth and nose with a mask, keep your skin covered and wear eye protection.
2.    Clear the ash from the roofs since it is very heavy and may cause buildings to collapse. Be careful when working on the roof.
3.    Avoid driving in areas with ash, since it will lift the ash and clog the engine, causing the vehicle to shut off.
4.    If you have a respiratory disorder, avoid contact with any amount of ash. Stay inside until the local health authorities deem it safe to go outdoors.
