To prepare for extreme heat, do the following:
• Install air conditioners near the windows; insulate them if necessary.
• Check air conditioning ducts to see if they are well insulated.
• Install temporary reflectors at the windows (to be used between the windows and the curtains), such as cardboard lined with foil, to reflect heat outwards.
• Place weather strips at the sides of the doors and windows to retain fresh air inside.
Extreme heat. Are you ready?
• Cover windows that receive sun rays during the morning or afternoon with windows, screens, shutters or awnings. (Awnings or shutters reduce heat entering a home up to 80 percent.)
• Keep shutters installed year round.
