It is useful to have a back-up home power generator in case of power outage, but they must be used following instructions from the manufacturer. A back-up home generator can only be plugged to the electrical system of your house by approved transfer panel and switch that has been installed by a qualified electrician. Never plug a generator in a wall outlet because the power produced by the generator could go back in the network and, amplified, put in danger the lives of utility employees working on the lines.
To use your generator in complete safety :
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Make sure to place the generator outside, in a well ventilated location and far from doors and windows in order to avoid exhaust gases from entering the house.
- Connect lighting appliances and household appliances directly to the generator. If you need to use extension cords, make sure they are of appropriate caliber and approved by recognized USA norms.
