How to Prepare and What to do in case of Blizzard

  • When a blizzard or strong blowing snow approaches, it is safer to attach a lifeline between your house and any outbuildings you may visit during the storm.
  • When a winter storm rages, stay inside. If you need to go out, dress up according to the weather. The outer clothing should be woven, water-repellent and protect from the wind. Your jacket should have a hood. Wear mittens – they are warmer than gloves – and more importantly, cover your head because it is where the major part of body heat is lost.
  • In open fields, visibility can be almost zero when a blizzard rages or in case of strong blowing snow, it is very easy to get lost. So do not try to make it to another building by walking to it, unless you have installed a rope or other device to guide you.
  • If you have to travel during a winter storm, do it during the day and inform someone of your itinerary and the time you plan to arrive.
  • If you are stuck in a blizzard or snowstorm, stay calm and do not get out of your car. Let fresh air enter the car by opening the window safe from the wind. You can let the engine run during about 10 minutes each half-hour, if the exhaust system is in good state. Be wary of exhaust fumes and check the exhaust pipe periodically to see if it’s not blocked by snow. Remember : carbon monoxide can’t be smelled and is potentially fatal.
  • Do some exercise once in a while to activate blood circulation in the hands and feet. In general, it is a good idea to move constantly to avoid falling asleep. If you are shoveling the snow around your car, do not make yourself exhausted.
  • Being exhausted in really cold temperatures can provoke death because of sweating or heart attack.
  • Stay aware of other cars passing by or rescue teams.
  • If you own a farm, shelter the animals. Generally, if the shelter structure is strong, we must place the animals in it. When this is done, all openings must be fixed firmly. Animals need to be sheltered before doing so for humans. Make sure supply in water won’t freeze. Several animals died from thirst during the winter, even if water supply was abundant, because the water was frozen and they couldn’t drink it.
