If your home suffered flood damage

Be aware of the dangers

Verify damage. Verify structural damage before reentering the house. Get in touch with pertinent professionals immediately if you suspect damage in water, gas, electricity and sewage pipelines.

Eliminate food damaged by water including canned food that has been in contact with water during the flood. Boil the water until the authorities notify that the water supply is safe for drinking.

Submit your flood insurance claim.

Call your flood insurance broker to submit you claim. Have the following information handy when performing the call: The name of the insurance company (your broker can make policies for more than one company). The policy number; and a contact phone number or email.

Take pictures. To ease you claim submission, take pictures of any water in the house and of damaged property. If necessary, place the items outside of the house. The broker will need evidence of the damage and damaged elements (such as: Clippings and rug samples, curtains, chairs) to prepare a repair estimate.
Make a list of lost and damaged items and, if possible, include your antiques and their value. If you can, have receipts of lost items available for the broker. Law enforcement officials may require removal of damaged items. If that is the case, keep a sample of the items for the broker.
