Prepare and Protect in case of Bomb threat

If you receive a bomb threat, stay calm and try to obtain as most information as possible. Even though it might not always be easy, pay attention to characteristics of the voice and to any other sound you are hearing. Make your interlocutor speak as long as possible and note everything that has been said.

Try hard to note the following details :

  • Does your interlocutor speak with a distinctive accent?
  • Does the voice sound disguised, muffled or strange?
  • Is the voice shrill or deep?
  • Is there any background noise (cars or bus passing by, bells, fax, printer)?
  • Are sounds coming from the inside or from the outside?

Call the police and building administration immediately after hanging up.

If you receive a bomb threat, do not touch any suspicious packages. If a suspicious package has been found, quit the area and immediately warn the police.

If you have been evacuated from the building, avoid standing near the windows or other potentially dangerous area. Do not block the sidewalk or the street; everything should be kept clean for the emergency staff arrival.

In case of an explosion, get out of the building as fast and as calmly as possible. If objects fall off from shelves or ceilings, get under a solid table or desk until the situation allows you to get out. Remember that you have to ensure your own security before trying to help others.

Making a bomb threat is a criminal act. Do not try to determine if the threat is real or not. Call the police.
