Preparing for evacuation

Anticipate the need to evacuate and be prepared for it. When a flood warning is issued you should:

•    Fill you the gas tank in your car and make sure the car emergency bag is ready.
•    If you do not have a vehicle, make transportation arrangements with friends or family.
•    Fill your containers with clean water.
•    Check your plans and emergency supplies, and see if something is missing.
•    Tune into the radio or television to listen to weather news.
•    Pay attention to alarm sirens and warning signals.
•    Take livestock and domestic pets to a safe place. Due to sanitary and health requirements, emergency shelters are not able to accept animals.
•    Adjust refrigerator and freezer thermostats to the coldest temperature possible.

In case of an evacuation order

Never disobey an evacuation order. Authorities will instruct you to leave your home if you are in a low-lying area or within the path of rising water. If a flood alert warning is issued for your area or authorities order to evacuate the area:
•    Carry only the essential items.
•    If you have enough time, shut off gas, power and water.
•    Unplug domestic appliances to avoid short circuit when power is restored.
•    Follow designated evacuation routes and prepare for the possibility of heavy traffic.
•    Do not attempt to cross streams and flooded streets by foot or in the car.

In case of an order to NOT evacuate

To ride out the storm as safely as possible:
•    Tune into the radio or television to listen to weather news.
•    Prepare to go to a shelter or neighbor’s home if your house has been damaged or if you are ordered to do so by the emergency personnel.
