In emergency preparations and emergency management, we all have a role to play.
Individuals and families
- Individuals take measures a long time in advance to prepare themselves and prepare their family to emergencies. If an emergency occurs, you should be ready to take care of your family and yourself during at least 72 hours. You should also understand the basic principles of first-aid and security measures.
- Every disaster is a local disaster. The different organization levels answer progressively as the emergency intensifies and their resources are required. The first to intervene are those that are the closest to the emergency.
First to intervene : firefighters, police, paramedics
- Firefighters, police, paramedics along with research and rescue teams are normally the first to intervene in case of emergency. They have the responsibility of managing most of the local emergencies as part of the municipal emergency plan. Learn more about the emergency plan of your area by contacting your emergency management organization.
Non-government organizations
- There are several non-profit, non-government organizations (NGOs) that play very important roles in terms of managing emergencies like disaster prevention/mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Learn more about NGO partners in your area.
State government
- Every state has an emergency management organization (EMO) that manages the higher scale emergencies and supply help to municipal teams or community response teams as required. The EMOs play an important role in the support of first responders and municipalities.
National government
- National departments and agencies support state EMOs as requested. They also manage emergencies of national scale such as nuclear safety, national defense and border safety.
